Program Overview
Western University DVM has a well-structured curriculum based on a problem-based learning concept, in which a small group of seven students works on a particular case study.
Below we have a breakdown of some checkpoints of the four-year curriculum –
1st Year and 2nd Year
- You will be having your problem-based learning classes of 2 hours.
- From the first year onwards, the school intervenes their students to get clinical experiences under which you will learn about suture patterns and how to wear sterile gowns and gloves for surgery properly.
- You will also have Anatomy Lab, where the cadaver of dogs and cats are there; you are responsible for dissecting that cadaver and learning about muscles, nerves, and bones. In case of any problem, you can assist the anatomist present in the lab.
- For more exploration, the college has a Basic Science Lab, where you will grab knowledge of physiology, embryology, and immunology. It is an interactive class.
- School also has Veterinarian Issues Class each week, where you will discuss the current situation of veterinary medicine, laws, and regulation in veterinary medicine.
Third Year – Western University DVM started clinical rotation in the third year. The school has its pet health center, where you will spend two weeks of the third Year. The third year is broken into four blocks –
- On Campus – Students will learn about public health, global health, food, and feed safety. Here you will be spending eight weeks.
- Small Animal – In this, you will learn about small animal medicine and emergency medicine. You will send around veterinary hospitals all across California in this block of 8 weeks.
- Large Animal/ Zoo/ Lab Animal – In this block, you will work in dairy and beef cattle, and for around two weeks, you will learn in the zoo. At last, you will be spending two weeks working in an animal laboratory.
- Equine Surgery – You will work with horses and small animals’ surgery and anaesthesia.
Fourth Year – In the fourth year, students are required to take one core internal medicine course and one core surgery course.
As per students, it is the most exciting year at Western University. Students are free to do their studies. Still, Western University CVM must approve the most important hospital in which students do clinical rotation.
Facilities
